The sewage treatment plant in Stahnsdorf, the oldest of Berliner Wasserbetriebe's six sewage treatment plants, has been in operation since 1931 and has a capacity of around 52,000 m³/day in dry weather. Around 44 per cent of the wastewater comes from the immediate surrounding area, mainly Potsdam, while a further proportion comes from south-west Berlin. The new building will double the capacity, which will make it possible to divert wastewater and carry out necessary maintenance work at other sewage treatment plants.

The new wastewater treatment plant will not only increase the connection capacity, but also make a decisive contribution to increasing the efficiency and sustainability of wastewater treatment in the region. As part of the consortium, HOLINGER, Sweco and AFRY will plan the plant using state-of-the-art technology and supervise its construction, setting pioneering standards in terms of environmental protection and sustainability.

"The construction of the new wastewater treatment plant in Stahnsdorf is at the heart of a healthy and sustainable water cycle. We are very honoured to have been awarded the contract for this important project and are determined to make a positive contribution to the quality of life of the local people," said Timo Dittrich, Managing Director of HOLINGER Ingenieure GmbH. "With our expertise and our innovative concept, we were able to win the contract for this challenging infrastructure project. We look forward to working with the Berlin Waterworks again."

The Stahnsdorf sewage treatment plant, located southwest of Berlin, will be replaced by a new, larger facility that will double its current capacity and incorporate the latest technological advancements, including advanced trace substance removal. The new plant will also feature an innovative energy concept, making extensive use of renewable energies. Construction is set to begin in 2029, with initial commissioning targeted for 2034 and full completion expected by 2036. The project team will collaborate closely with local authorities and the community to ensure smooth execution and that all expectations are met.
