Less nitrogen in the digestion water

Berlin Waterworks has installed a new process stage at the Waßmannsdorf wastewater treatment plant to reduce ammonium nitrogen in the effluent of sludge dewatering. Planning, construction supervision and commissioning of this project, which took almost ten years, were in the hands of HOLINGER (as NAN of ARGEN HyTS and ATS/GC).

In four SBRs (sequencing batch reactors), the ammonium nitrogen contained in the process water (approx. 1000 mg/l) is converted to molecular nitrogen by partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation. The system consists of two parallel lines, so that single- or two-stage process control is possible.
