International collaboration for clean water

For the Emscher Association, the cross-border Swiss and German work group, HOLINGER2, is planning the construction of a new sludge treatment plant at the Emscher confluence wastewater treatment plant. Some parts of the plant are already 50 years old, and three digestion tanks will be renovated and converted for serial operation. The pumping system for the digested sludge will also be renewed with the addition of two new 0.6 km sections of pressure piping.

A temporary pumping station, which will be needed to transfer the return flows from the old digesters to the new treatment plant, will be constructed ahead of schedule in the summer of 2023. In addition, a new low-maintenance system will replace the ageing process water system.
